OUR MISSION

We celebrate foodways and build community to cultivate a more livable and just planet.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We are socially and environmentally conscious and aim to uplift the work of small farmers, chefs, artisans, makers, and entrepreneurs in all that we do.  Our tours highlight and give preference to individuals and companies who practice sustainability. We are proud to be a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.

REGENERATIVE TOURISM

As a company focused on ecotourism and travel, we recognize the impact our industry has on the climate, and are constantly engaged in addressing that impact in the most socially and environmentally responsible ways. Our work is rooted in sustainability and this guides our choices at every step. We are committed to making a net positive impact on climate change by investing in the communities we serve and making concrete contributions to environmental initiatives.

While we are particularly interested in supporting environmental initiatives focused on habitat restoration, reforestation, and salmon conservation, we gladly accept suggestions and are always open to fostering new collaborations.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Food is the lens through which we view our work.

Food represents ritual, culture, and communication; it is a marker of change and the passage of time; it is a way to expand our knowledge of the world, and a way to communicate with others. We recognize that our food comes from the earth, and nourishes our bodies and souls and that we need to nourish the Earth in return. We are a part of the food system which connects farmers, artisans, eaters, and everything in between.

Creativity and collaboration with people and organizations who share our values is key to our success.

We strive to grow and thrive alongside others, lifting as we climb. Whenever possible we seek to collaborate rather than to compete. Together, our combined efforts will have a greater impact.

We are guided by racial, social, economic, and environmental justice and strive to use our work to fight for the liberation of all people to the fullest extent of our abilities.

We are proud of our commitments and don’t try to hide them. There is room at our table for anyone who shares these commitments. From our staff to our vendors to our creative partners, we believe that we all have a role to play in a solutionary approach to addressing our most pressing issues, and we encourage involvement and outspokenness within our ranks.

We are committed to the practices of sustainable travel and regenerative tourism.

At the same time, we know that creating a truly sustainable business is a process, and we can’t do everything ourselves. As such we are committed to vetting and monitoring our business practices in line with global standards, and we apply the same standards to ourselves that we expect of our partners. To maintain accountability and transparency, we clearly define and share our understanding of the terms we use to describe our work, and don’t hide behind buzzwords or greenwashing. We aim to be leaders in this endeavour and push the envelope, and be at the cutting edge.

We believe that profits are a means to an end.

We believe that everyone has the right to a high quality of life, and we will use our business as a way to achieve that. We pay our employees a living wage and fairly compensate our partners for their expertise and time. Our pricing structure and business model are designed to create the revenues that allow us to do this. We keep our business strong so that we can achieve these goals.

Bog and Thunder is a fun, welcoming, and supportive place to work.

We believe in workplace democracy and our staff is empowered to create the conditions that allow them to thrive. We recognize that people have different experiences and backgrounds and our goal is to create an environment that works for everyone and embraces these differences. We respect the work-life balance.

Bog & Thunder is proud to be a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.

As a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration, we commit to deliver plans aligned with the pathways to cut tourism emissions in half over the next decade and reach Net Zero emissions as soon as possible before 2050.

Bog & Thunder commits to:

  • Support the global commitment to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero as soon as possible before 2050;

  • Deliver climate action plans within 12 months from becoming a signatory (or updating existing plans), and begin implementing them;

  • Align plans with the five pathways of the Declaration (Measure, Decarbonise, Regenerate, Collaborate, Finance) to accelerate and co-ordinate climate action in tourism;

  • Report publicly on an annual basis on progress against interim and long-term targets, as well as on actions being taken;

  • Work in a collaborative spirit, sharing good practices and solutions, and disseminating information to encourage additional organisations to become signatories and supporting one another to reach targets as quickly as possible.

Salmon farms have huge environmental, sustainability, and animal welfare issues. We support WildFish’s campaign to take farmed salmon off the table. Our guests will not find farmed salmon on our menus, tours, or culinary experiences.
